Understanding Food Insecurity in Regina

Food insecurity is not always visible. Learn what it means and how communities can respond with dignity.

Understanding Food Insecurity in Regina

Food insecurity means not having reliable or consistent access to enough safe, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food to live a healthy and active life. It is not simply about feeling hungry for a day—it is an ongoing challenge that affects physical health, mental well-being, children's development, and a family's overall stability.

Food insecurity can affect anyone. Working families, newcomers, seniors, students, single parents, people with disabilities, and individuals experiencing unexpected changes in employment, housing, health, or family circumstances may all struggle to afford healthy food. Rising grocery prices, increasing rent, utility costs, and transportation expenses have made it more difficult for many households to keep up with basic living costs, even when someone in the family is employed.

Food Insecurity in Regina Today

Food insecurity has become one of the fastest-growing social challenges in Regina and across Saskatchewan. Community organizations continue to report record demand for food assistance. The Regina Food Bank supported more than 22,600 individuals, distributed over 93,000 food hampers, and provided the equivalent of approximately 4.1 million meals in its most recent reporting year. Local reports also estimate that up to 22% of Regina residents experience some level of food insecurity, while more than one in four people across Saskatchewan now live in food-insecure households.

These numbers remind us that food insecurity is not limited to a single group. Many people seeking assistance are employed, raising children, studying, or rebuilding their lives after unexpected hardships. Financial pressure can affect anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. Across Canada, food bank visits have reached the highest levels ever recorded, reflecting the growing impact of the rising cost of living.

It Is Often Hidden

Food insecurity is not always visible. A family may appear financially stable while quietly making impossible choices every month—choosing between groceries, rent, medication, transportation, childcare, or school supplies. Many parents reduce their own meals so their children can eat first. Seniors may skip nutritious food to afford prescription medication, while students and newcomers often face similar difficult decisions.

Because of embarrassment or fear of being judged, many individuals wait until they are in a serious crisis before asking for help. This hidden nature of food insecurity means that many families struggle in silence long before they reach out to community organizations.

Beyond Food

Access to nutritious food affects much more than hunger. Children who regularly receive healthy meals are better able to learn and participate in school. Adults with reliable access to food are more likely to maintain good physical and mental health, remain employed, and recover from difficult life events. Supporting food security strengthens families, improves community well-being, and helps people regain stability during challenging times.
