Both forms of giving are valuable, but they have different rules and purposes.

Both Zakat and Sadaqah are acts of charity encouraged in Islam, but they serve different purposes. While both help those in need and earn the pleasure of Allah ﷻ, understanding the difference helps ensure that each donation is given with the correct intention and distributed appropriately.
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is an obligatory act of worship for Muslims who meet the required financial conditions (Nisab). It is a fixed percentage of wealth that must be paid annually and distributed only to those who qualify under Islamic law.
"And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves—you will find it with Allah."
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:110)
Zakat is not optional charity. It is a religious obligation that purifies wealth, strengthens communities, and helps ensure that the rights of those in need are fulfilled.
Sadaqah is voluntary charity that may be given at any time, in any amount. It is not limited to money and can include food, clothing, acts of kindness, volunteering, supporting community projects, or simply bringing happiness to another person.
Unlike Zakat, Sadaqah has no minimum amount and no specific eligibility requirements. It can be given whenever a person wishes to seek the reward and pleasure of Allah.
"The believer's shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity."
— Jami' at-Tirmidhi
When donating through Rizq Relief, please select the category that matches your intention. If you wish to fulfill your annual Zakat obligation, choose the Zakat option so your donation can be managed according to Islamic guidelines. If you simply wish to support community programs or assist families beyond Zakat eligibility, you may choose Sadaqah.
If you are unsure whether your contribution qualifies as Zakat or have questions about calculating your Zakat, we encourage you to consult a qualified Islamic scholar before making your donation.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"Protect yourselves from the Fire, even if only with half a date in charity."
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim
Whether through Zakat or Sadaqah, every sincere act of giving strengthens our community and brings hope to those experiencing hardship. By giving with the right intention and through trusted channels, we can help ensure that support reaches those who need it most while seeking the pleasure and reward of Allah ﷻ.
